DIY Face Masks...

Everyone's skin is different. Everyone's skin is different every day. For instance...it's winter and my skin is dry, flaky and in need of some serious moisture. However, I've been pampering my face nightly with lots of facial oils and treatments so my face is actually doing really well in the moisture department right now, but because it's winter I've taken the sun shade off of my drivers side window on my car and I'm noticing more freckles and sun spots starting to show up on the left side of my face. 

Luckily I know that if I catch those little melanin spots early on, they are pretty quick and easy to get rid of. You can spend lots of money on all kinds of concoctions promising to erase sun spots, get rid of texture, clear acne, infuse moisture and some of them probably work really well! I'm not knocking the skin care biz....I'm one of the people hawking my wares, and I believe in my products wholeheartedly! But I also know that most people don't have $15-$200 per problem area to spend on skin care fixes that only rear their ugly heads once in a while.

This is why I thought I'd share some of my own tried and true DIY face masks, scrubs and concoctions I've made over the years that do the trick without breaking the bank.

First let me make a disclaimer by stating that these have worked for me and my skin type. They may not work for you and your skin type, but I digress. Please don't use lemon juice on your skin if you have a citrus allergy. Also, please don't keep any of these DIY items very long as they use fresh ingredients and I can't imagine what a 2 month old avocado/hemp seed facial mud mask looks like in your fridge if you forget about it.....eeewwwwww!

Dry/Cracked Lips: 1 tbsp. white sugar, 1 tbsp honey. Mix in small bowl and using a clean cotton swab apply the scrub to lips. Remove with damp cloth after exfoliating.

Moisturizing mask for dry skin: 3 tbsp shea butter, 1 tsp vitamin E oil, 1 tsp aloe vera gel. Mix in a small bowl and apply liberally to face. Let sit up to 20 minutes then rinse. Keeps in fridge up to 30 days.

Moisturizing mask for oily skin: 3 tbsp milk, 1/4 lime squeezed juice, 1 tsp rosehips seed oil, 1 tsp aloe vera. Mix in a small bowl and apply to face with a clean makeup brush. Let sit 10 minutes then rinse. Make immediately before use and don't keep any extra product as it will spoil quickly. The lactic acid in the milk is very nourishing to the skin and when mixed with the other ingredients helps to stave off your facial skins' oil production temporarily.

Moisturizing mask for sensitive skin: 3 tbsp shea butter, 2 tbsp jojoba oil, 3 tbsp aloe vera gel, 1 tsp vitamin E oil. Mix in a small bowl and apply liberally to face. Let sit up to 20 minutes then rinse. May be used nightly and will keep in fridge up to 30 days.

Acne fighting mask: 1/2 tsp turmeric, 1 tbsp honey, 1-2 drops tea tree oil. Mix in a small bowl and apply entire mixture to face leaving on 10 minutes. Rinse well. 

Puffy eye treatment: Soak green tea bag in hot water 5 minutes then remove and place under eye for 5 minutes. The caffeine will de-puff the eye naturally up to 12 hours.

Glowing skin mask: 1 ripe avocado, 1 egg white, 1 tbsp fresh lemon juice. Peel avocado and mash. Mix in egg whit and lemon juice. Apply to face using clean makeup brush. Let sit up to 30 minutes and rinse well.

Exfoliating face mask: 10 fresh strawberries mashed, 3 tbsp raw honey, 1 tbsp olive oil mayonnaise. Mix well in small bowl and apply entire mixture to face avoiding eye area. Let sit up to 20 minutes and rinse well.

Dark spot fading mask: 2 tsp raw honey, 1/2 tsp fresh lemon juice. Combine in small bowl and apply to face with clean makeup brush avoiding eye area. Let sit 20-30 minutes then rinse well. Can be done twice weekly until dark spots have faded away. Great for melasma, age spots and freckles.

Pore tightening mask: Perfect to before going out on the town! 1/2 ripe tomato, 1/4 cucumber. Wash and peel cucumber and blend with 1/2 tomato in blender until smooth. Apply directly to skin in a gentle circular motion. Let sit up to 15 minutes then rinse well.

Hangover mask - reduces inflammation and helps skin glow: 1 tbsp instant or ground coffee, 1 tbsp powdered turmeric, 1 tbsp plain greek yogurt. Mix all in small bowl and apply all over face, including under eyes. Let sit up to 20 minutes then rinse well. Poof....no more puffy face!

Breakout prevention mask: Organic egg yolk. Crack egg and separate white from yolk passing back and forth between shells. Apply egg yolk with clean hands to face making sure not to get in eyes or mouth. Let sit 15 minutes then rinse with warm water. This will shrink pores and prevent breakouts.

Calming face mask: Stressed skin? Try this calming face mask and your skin will thank you. 3 tsp oats, 1 tsp almond, hemp or plain milk, 1 tsp plain yogurt, 1 tsp water. Blend oats and milk until the  mixture forms a thick paste. Mix in water and yogurt. Apply to clean skin and let sit 15-30 minutes. Rinse well.
